Failing as a biz? Merger is not necessarily a good answer

Well hard times have hit Yahoo! In an attempt to capture more toys on the monopoly board, Microsoft has put in a bid of $44 billion for the search company. Read about it here. Is Yahoo! in that much trouble? Do they really need to even consider a merger or just re-invent themselves? To be fair to Yahoo!, I don’t know how serious they are about the move. But, in so many cases like this, mergers are the easy way out. I understand that sometimes a merger is the only solution left. But, I can’t believe that’s true for the innovative brain power at Yahoo!

Mergers allow everyone to sigh a collective "whew, great we dodged a bullet." But, what does it do to the possibility of innovative reinvention. Maybe Yahoo! needs to reform itself and become something better. Merging with Microsoft will not make them better. It will make them safe.
